That makes me less likely to stick the piece in my "gig" book, since I don't want to be stuck turning pages when I'm out playing.Ģ) If I'm looking at the tab line, particularly if I'm sight reading something (which appears to be the topic at hand) then I'm likely to miss some aspect of the piece, like an unexpected rhythm, that the tab can't notate.ģ) It makes the arranger lazier about adding fret and string markings to the standard notation staff, since that information is already in the tab staff. Things I hate about tab:ġ) It takes twice the amount of paper, and makes me turn pages for a piece of music that would have no page turns if written in standard notation. I don't view tab as cheating, just annoying. That's one thing I like about Piano music, the notes on the staff are only playable in one spot and it makes reading, ultimately much easier. it just goes to show that neither system is really perfect, IMO. If the piece includes TAB, it's just so much easier and quicker to look at the TAB and I do the same, even though I am very good at reading standard modern notation. I'm the same way as you though, when it comes to reading music with TAB. I think for classical guitar it would be great if they would use the lute TAB system and include fingerings. Of course lute TAB uses letters instead of numbers so you can still include numbered fingerings. One thing that's good about standard notation though is the ability to read fingerings, TAB doesn't provide that and that is definitely a flaw in the system.

Also, music for guitar is transposed one octave higher for convenience sake but still, you're not playing the actual notes in represented in pitch, anyway. For example, when reading sheet music for guitar, many notes can be played in more then one spot and that makes reading music for guitar not what I would call intuitive. In someways TAB it has it's sensibilities.

I don't look at it as cheating, anymore, I used to before I got into playing lute and realized that TAB isn't a new thing invented for rock guitarists who can't read music.
